I find it really disturbing that we view people like Myhrvold as heroes when really, well, there's something a little "off" in their pursuits.

I mean, even Hawking said we're taking a risk courting aliens. They might not be the benevolent gods that some geeks seemingly seek.

And Myrvold can't remember **** - so he's recording everything he does in his life? In medical and scientific circles, this is considered a brain disorder.

Trouble is, some geeks think they're so darn smart they can't have a brain disorder and they're too arrogant to know what they don't know about biochemistry.

Unfortunately, technological expertise is what gets rewarded in this culture. And so we equate financial success with brilliance.

We better wake up before our entire genome is dumbed down to the level of people who can't remember one phone number. We will miss our collective prefrontal cortex when it's gone. Not to mention the capacity for empathy. It could get ugly. In fact, it already is.

Nathan Myhrvold is a jerk. He files for useless patents just so he can use them to sue and shake down other companies that actually are innovating. He doesn't actually invent or create anything. His company Intellectual Vultures does perform a service or make a product that people use; all it does is manufacture litigation.

Don't be fooled by wikipedia pages (which sometimes are PR pieces on the subject they are about). I suggest you find somebody else who is worthy of your admiration.
