09 is just under a week old and I think it makes sense to start off a fresh year with some fresh faces. Here is a collection of awesome musical kids to remind us of the unspoiled potential and enormous programmability of youth.

DJ Sara (8) & DJ Ryusei (5) are a brother-sister DJ combo from Tokyo that manages to do the virtually impossible, make noodling scratch solos entertaining.

Yoo Ye Eun is five year old piano prodigy from South Korea. She was born blind and apparently received no formal training, but can play virtually anything after a single listen.

Tony Royster Jr (12)

Tony Royster Jr. is over 20 now, but this clip was shot when we was 12. He’s gone on to lots of success and acclaim. I think he’s on tour was Jay-Z now. But I put up this clip because I want to set up a little showdown with another drummer who’s actually 12 years old now.

Yo. Now, I’m no drum expert, so I’m not going to suggest who is the better drummer, but in terms of pure entertainment value… Pssshhh…

The Wrong Trousers (Teens)

The Wrong Trousers is a group from California. This clip was taken when they were in high school singing on the street for sneaker money. They’ve since gone on to bigger and better things, including this fantastic logo:

The Tuttle Kids (8, 10, 12)

All I know about this is from the youtube clip caption: The Tuttle kids. Michael (8) and Sullivan (10) play a bluegrass version of El Cumbanchero on mandolin and guitar with sister Molly. Papa Tuttle is apparently a musician and teacher, which is not very surprising.

Sungha Jung (12)

To wrap up, there’s one last acoustic jam. It’s performed by Sungha Jung, another South Korean prodigy.

Here’s hoping you get off to as good a start as these kids have…

Actually, it’s funny you mention that. I went to a guitar hero launch party in NY a few months ago. It was the first time I’d ever played it and I was so bad that I was kicked out of the group I was supposed to be teamed up with.
