I get the feeling that as we get closer to the election, we’re going to start hearing more and more Obama-inspired music. I’m all for it. This week I’ve heard two new songs. One by Nas from his very good new mixtape.
The other is from Cody Chesnutt, a soul singer from Georgia who a few years ago released one of my favorite albums, The Headphone Masterpiece, a double LP of songs recorded in his bedroom, often from his bed. He had a big hit with the Roots, but since then Cody’s kind of retreated from the music scene, and I hadn’t heard anything new from him for a couple years. Then today my friend Robin sent me his new song “Afrobama”. As the name suggests, it’s about Obama and it sounds like Afrobeat. How can you go wrong?
