The Blog is Back

Sometime in April, shortly after I posted my FREE AI WEIWEI mix, my website was repeatedly hacked, injected with all sorts of bad things, and taken offline. I was super busy at the time and didn’t have time to get to bottom of how it happened or clean it up. Now it’s October and I’ve finally got my site back. To mark the occasion I planned to make a new mix. Sadly I haven’t had time, so instead here is a half mix that I made around the time Guru passed and never got around to finishing. Only 26 minutes, but worth posting I think. As Gza told us all those years ago, “Too many songs, weak rhymes that’s mad long; make it brief son, half short and twice strong.”

Last week on Facebook I asked my friends to dedicate songs to the jailed artist/activist Ai Weiwei. Many responded and the songs they posted expressed a mix of outrage, reassurance, appreciation, anger, and empathy. I promised I’d make a mix out them to keep the word alive. Here it is…

Songs of reluctance and regret by Bettye LaVette, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Ben E King, Deer Tick, Ann Peebles, Frankie Beverly, Arcade Fire, Arthur Lee & Love, Bonnie Prince Billie, Chocolate Genius, Larry Banks, Bilal, D’Angelo, Broken Social Scene, and so on and so forth.

This was originally supposed to be a kind of anti-Valentine’s Day mix about love lost, but I lost the plot half way through putting it together and decided to scrap it. My friend Jeroen just put out a superior Valentine’s Day mix called ‘Rappers need love too’. I’ve had that on repeat for the past couple of days and the pressure from it made me give this a second shot. Here it is. Hope you like.

VERY FEEL Lovecast

These days, I don’t have enough time to make mixes, but I still want to share music, so I’ve decided to start the VERY FEEL podcast, a series of unmixed mixes, arranged according to theme, released at irregular intervals, and tied together with spoken waffle provided by myself and a friend.

Below are episodes 1+2 which I made recently together with my dear friend Charlie. The theme is love. We picked and sequenced the songs so that they cover critical points on a trajectory from first meeting to marriage proposal. There’s supposed to be two more that chronicle suspicion, disillusionment, and breakup, so stay tuned….

Baby beats

Image flagrantly jacked from OG Raymond Scott

These days many of the of my favorite are people having babies. Since I move around a lot, I rarely get a chance to see them or help out in any way. This instrumental mix is a modest attempt to right that wrong. It provides a nutritious blend of baby-friendly beats to feed a growing mind and nourish a grimey soul.

One office under a groove

I’m getting ready to leave Holland, my home away from home. I’ve been here for the past 6 months working at OMA, the office to which I owe many of my professional skills and most of my gray hairs. One of the many virtues of OMA is its workforce, which is drawn from all corners of the earth. Before I left the office I decided to try a little experiment and see if I could make a mix that reflects the variety of the place. I asked every nationality to send me a song. Almost every one did and the result is below. Nuff love to all my colleagues past, present, and future. The beat goes on…

Feel my horns

Still in New York and, inspired by all the music junkies around me, I finally made a mix that I’ve been talking about for like 2 years. It’s called “Feel My Horns” and as the name hopefully implies, it’s all powerful, horn-driven music. I tried to spread it across a few styles – Afrobeat, Brass Band, Dub, Salsa, Klezmer, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, etc. Hope you like it.

YES WE DID: The Obama Victory Ecstatic House Mix

Since the election, I’ve avoided talking much about my reaction. Being abroad, I’ve sort of missed out on the communal catharsis that my ride-or-die Obama supporting friends back home have enjoyed. I wasn’t sure what to do about that, then last night my friend Jeremy suggested that I make a mix to express the joy of the moment. So I went ahead and did that and contrary to my initial plan, it ended up being nothing but house. Uplifting, joyful, soul cleansing house. So this is how I feel. As they say, a mix is worth a thousands words.

It’s mix time again.

This is one of those geographically-oriented mixes like the Dirty South one from last year. But this time we’re headed out to the Persian Gulf. So we lose the 808 drums and pornographic chanting and pick up tablas and tambourines, heartfelt declarations of devotion and longing, and an absolutely amazing amount of synthesized strings.

Winter Workout

Here’s my first contribution to the Drunken Lion Sound System mix series. It’s mostly uptempo stuff of the electro house, Baltimore club, baile funk type. It’s getting cold up here north of the equator, so I put this together to inspire us party people to fight the urge to crawl into a ball and sleep through winter. Turn the heat up, turn the bass up, and let me know what you think… ((Bomb sound effect, immediately followed by sirens))

Pain Release 2007

A couple days ago we wrapped up work on MAD Dinner, the book I’ve been making for the past couple months.

As in any publishing project, the end of MAD Dinner production involved a lot of long nights. I’ve had this experience a lot of times and it’s disturbingly similar every time. So I thought why not make a little diary of how it went this time. Then I realized that would be pretty boring, so I decided to set it to music. The result is below – Pain Release 2007 – an all-nighter in mixtape form….

Quit hatin the south

Being so far from home, I sometimes find myself overcome by irrational feelings of loyalty for more familiar places. For example, last week I made a mix called “Quit hatin the south”. It was inspired by a UGK song of the same name and put together some of my favorite southern hip hop and R&B. I’m not from the south. I’ve actually only been there a handful of times. But somehow, through the magic of expat alienation, I summoned the gall to construct a 60 minute rallying call in defense of a region that I don’t know very well and have often belittled since the election of George W Bush.

I sent the mix around to some of my southern friends, and due to their overwhelming reactions (of which I will provide no evidence whatsoever), I figured might as well post it up here.

Give a listen and let me know what you think:

Sunday Morning Music

I made my first computer mix yesterday. I’m still getting used to this weird, non-physical style of mixing, so it’s a little rough, but the songs are good, so I thought why not put it up. It’s called Sunday Morning, and is made up of some of my favorite down tempo hip hop songs. The vibe suits my mood these days, so it probably speaks better for me than I do….
